Situated in the shadow of the Cuillins mountains, the distillery is to be found in the exposed West Coast of Skye, on the shores of Loch Harport. The distillery was founded by Kenneth & Hugh MacAskgill, two brothers from the Isle of Eigg. The distillery was expanded in 1880 and again 1900, with the still house being completely rebuilt after a fire in 1960.
The distillery operated a triple distillation process up until 1928 when it reverted to the more common double distillation. Vapours from the fives stills are cooled by the traditional method of worm tubs - great lengths of copper tubing submerged in tubs of cold water.

Talisker was built in 1831 by the MacAskill brothers from Eigg and named after their estate mansion just over the hill.
