Denne whiskyeftermiddag byder på 8 udsøgte Glenfarclas i høj alder. Der er fire specialudgaver fra destilleriet, alle i begrænset oplag: en 29 års sherry enkeltfad, en 32 års juleaftapning fra 2 portvinsfade, en 41 års krydsning af et Fino- og et Olorosofad og en jubilæumsaftapning fra 4 sherryfade på tilsammen 175 år.
De uafhængige aftappere bidrager med to bourbon enkeltfade på 25 og 46 år og to legendariske sherry enkeltfade, begge på 41 år.
Det bliver en enestående lejlighed til at opleve svært tilgængelig klassewhisky aftappet for 4, 6, 9 og 10 år siden!

På grund af det lokale klima, mister Glenfarclas kun ca. 0.5% alkohol årligt som angel’s share, mens gennemsnittet for branchen er ca. 2%. Denne tilfældighed har stor betydning for udviklingen på fad. I stedet for fordampning, sker der hos Glenfarclas en oxidering som giver mærket en egen robusthed og kompleksitet som yderligere forstærkes af at 2/3 af lagerbeholdningen modner på sherryfade.

Nose: Starts mostly on various herbs (I get thyme again as well as coriander indeed but it is soon to become very fruity, much fresher than the OB’s and that the Cadenhead’s in a certain way. Lots of dried tangerines. Ham. More peat smoke as well, it could be that this one is from an old peated batch actually. And again a little olive oil and motor oil! Just as great Mouth: a bit less ‘Glenfarclas’ (no sherry it seems, or only refill) but still very, very good. Ample, punchy, fruitier again (overripe apples, quinces), rather salty, liquoricy, peppery… The oak is well here but it never gets the whisky to be drying or too tannic. Slightly mustardy as well – but no peat this time I’m afraid. Quite hot I must say, at 40 years of age.
Finish: long, maybe a little tannic and drying now, getting sort of herbal and tea-ish like most whiskies of its age. In short, a very ‘different’ but truly excellent Glenfarclas, certainly not a conveyor of bad publicity for the brand, quite the opposite. 90 points.

Nose: Huge notes of sherry with beautifully creamy malt and fruit. It develops with butterscotch, manuka honey, and the sweetest, creamiest sherry you'll ever smell! A touch of berry fruit, and quince jelly.
Palate: Rich and umami-like, there is an intense amount of cocoa and panna cotta, with dry sherry and molasses. It becomes peppery, and there is a good dollop of caramel source too.
Finish: Very good length, ends on burnt sugar, dark chocolate and tobacco leaves.

Thosop Belgium 41 år 49,7% 1968/2010 1st fill Oloroso hogshead 7.2.68 + 1st fill Fino hogshead 11.12.68, 318 fl.
Nose: think fruitcake, honeys, leather, putty, patanegra ham, mint liqueur and sandalwood and add a wee drop of very old balsamic vinegar. There, you have it. With water: the oak comes out but it’s not a varnishy one. Faint mouldiness, old wine cellar, saltpetre.
Mouth: a tad more vigorous than the nose, more tannic as well. Pepper and capsicum, cloves, tobacco, prunes, old Armagnac, blackcurrants… It’s not a smooth old Glenfarclas this time, rather a fighter! With water: some fruits are back, some aren’t. Banana skin, dried pears, green tea.
Finish: rather long, more on mint tea, with a little aniseed in the aftertaste besides the tannins.
Comments: I think it’s really excellent, but not for people who are scared of a little oak. I’m not ;-). 91 points.

Old Malt Cask 41 år 50% 12.66/3.08 sherry butt, 326 fl.
Nose: completely different from the 1970, much more a minty/herbal kind of sherry at first nosing, with even whiffs of dill and celery, and then the anticipated cortege of raisins, chocolate, fruit jams (blackberries), leather, soy sauce and game. Rather wonderful, the 1970 being a tad rougher.
Mouth: very punchy, very concentrated and very dry, even drying actually. Huge tannins, overcooked wine sauce, pepper, fruit spirit, herb vodka (zubrovska), overinfused herbal tea (cherry stems, blackcurrant leaves). Gets a tad quieter after a while and more on mint just like on the nose. Heavy liquorice as well.
Finish: extremely long, thick, coating your throat with tannins, liquorice and ‘fruit extracts’.
Comments: sherrytastic - this is for extreme sherry freaks only. The nose is quite fabulous but once again, if you don’t like sherry in your malt you’ll abhor this. 89 points.
